Our Parque Tayrona expedition begins in the heart of Santa Marta, a city whose colonial architecture is beautifully highlighted by the Caribbean sun. Expect warm, sunny days with occasional evening breezes during fall (September-November). Average temperatures hover around 80°F (27°C), perfect for exploring.
Transportation: A private taxi from the airport to Santa Marta costs approximately $25-$35 USD. Accommodation: We'll book a charming boutique hotel in Santa Marta for three nights – around $75 USD per night, totaling $900 USD for four people. We'll spend two nights within Parque Tayrona itself, in eco-lodges for a total of $600 USD for the group.
Day 1: We'll start with a guided walking tour of Santa Marta’s historic center ($40 USD per person), admiring the colonial architecture and learning about its fascinating history. The local music, a vibrant mix of Caribbean rhythms, will follow us throughout the day, especially in the evenings near the seaside restaurants. We'll dine at a traditional restaurant, savoring fresh seafood and arepas ($60 USD total).
Day 2: After breakfast, we will take a bus to Parque Tayrona ($15 USD total for the group). The journey is about an hour, giving you time to admire the Colombian landscape. The local people are incredibly friendly and welcoming and will gladly chat with you and give tips. Look out for local plants such as the colorful heliconias and iguanas. Once in Parque Tayrona, expect plenty of nature trails, beautiful beaches and wildlife. We'll spend the afternoon relaxing on the beach and swimming in the Caribbean Sea. For dinner, we'll try some local cuisine, like fresh fish or rice and beans ($80 USD total). The night sounds are dominated by the sound of the ocean and jungle insects.
Day 3: A day for exploring! We will hike to a secluded beach, enjoying the stunning views. Lunch will be a picnic we prepare ($40 USD total), adding to our immersion in nature. The lush vegetation and the crystal-clear waters, together with the local people, form a very harmonic ecosystem. At night, we'll enjoy a bonfire at our eco-lodge. It's a perfect time for stargazing and enjoying the sounds of nature (no extra cost).
Day 4: We'll return to Santa Marta ($15 USD total for transportation), and spend the afternoon exploring the local markets before heading to the airport. We’ll grab some street food for lunch ($30 USD total). Remember that many restaurants and shops only take cash, especially in more rural locations such as Parque Tayrona.
